Deliverability and disjointed tools hold back outbound growth

Spellbook was seeing a ton of growth and inbound demand from SMB law firms, but knew that it’d need a different approach if they wanted to win the untapped up-market segments. To capture it, they’d need to build a dedicated outbound sales function that could scale efficiently and reliably.

This is exactly what they brought in Jay to do. Jay Meyers, a seasoned business development leader, joined Spellbook to build and scale the company’s outbound sales function from the ground up. However, after building a strong foundation for the outbound function, it quickly became clear that challenges with tooling were holding them back:

Sales reps were spending one to two hours every day manually building and enriching lists. This took valuable time away from actually engaging prospects and moving deals forward.

Deliverability that stalled email performance

Email campaigns in HubSpot yielded just less than 25 percent open rates, with many messages ending up in spam folders. Overuse of the tool for outbound also damaged Spellbook’s sender domain reputation.

Workflows split across tools

Attempts with Gong Engage and HubSpot sequencing proved clunky and inefficient. Missing functionality forced reps to juggle multiple platforms instead of working in one streamlined system.

Looking forward

By combining SEO with valuable content, the team plans to better understand the intent behind each visit and ensure outreach stays consistent with the visitor’s industry, persona, and the specific content they engaged with.

When Jay first started at Spellbook, the team tested outsourcing cold email campaigns. The experience made it clear how important it is to own your outbound motion. The messaging did not feel authentic, and there was little care for how much of their market was being burned.
